Having spent much of the weekend at this year’s Regina Folk Festival it is time to bring you the highlights! My favorite performers from the weekend include (in no particular order):
The Barr Brothers, a folk band from Montreal, opened the main stage Sunday night. Their easy listening style was perfect for a relaxing afternoon in the park.
Mavis Staples, a high energy R&B singer from Chicago, put on a superb performance Friday night. A few songs in she covered “The Weight” and later her band broke out into some blues. At one point she asked everyone to stand up and shout. Of course not everyone did and she remarked to an audience member near her “You weren’t doing noth’n!”
Great Lake Swimmers, another Canadian folk/rock band from Toronto, got the show rolling Saturday night.
The Wooden Sky entertained a solid crowd Sunday afternoon. They are a folk/rock/country band from Toronto. Rumour has it that they will be back in Regina in November.
Honourable mentions are in order for The Jim Cuddy Band, Serena Ryder, and Kacy and Clayton.
