100th Grey Cup

The Calgary Stampeders and the Toronto Argonauts will meet this Sunday for the 100th Grey Cup! Let’s take a look at how the teams match up.

On offence the Calgary Stampeders rushed an average of 116 yards a game, second in the league. Toronto, on the other hand rushed a league-low average of 89.6 yards a game. The stats are more equal in the passing aspect. Calgary averages 275 yards passing a game and Toronto 285 yards (5th and 3rd in the league respectively). Quarterback efficiency is also evenly matched between these two teams. Glenn has a pass completion percentage of 66.7%, 25 touchdowns, 16 interceptions. Ray’s completion rate was 68.6%, with 20 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.  Both quarterbacks  average  8.7 yards a pass. The Argonauts have Chad Owens, the best receiver in the league, with 1328 receiving yards, 6 touchdowns, and 10 fumbles. Meanwhile, Jon Cornish, the best rusher in the league, plays for Calgary. He has rushed for 1457 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 5 fumbles.

The teams are also comparable defensively. Toronto’s pass defensive was 269 yards a game and Calgary’s 275 yards a game (3rd and 4th in the league). Toronto’s rush defense was 111 yards a game, fifth in the league. Against the rush Calgary held opponents to 99 yards per game – fourth in the league. Toronto had a league-low 27 sacks against rivals, Calgary was third with 43 sacks. Toronto led the league in giveaways and takeaways with +10. Calgary was sixth at -4.

On special teams Toronto’s Swayze Waters completed 74% of his field goal attempts. Calgary’s Rene Paredes has missed only three field goals all season giving him a 93% completion rate.
