Last week my class studied marine biomes. The students were fascinated by the creatures that live in the ocean. I had the children learn the different ocean zones – epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathypelagic, abyssopelagic, and hadalpelagic. I found a neat project which provides information about each zone and the animals which live there. As usual, I adapted the activity to suit my needs. The original project can be found here. The students created a flip book using a folded half sheet of bristol board. After, they cut five lines on the front portion to represent each zone. The front is covered with construction paper corresponding to the amount of light in that particular zone. It also shows the animals which live in that zone. When the book is opened facts about that zone are displayed. I obtained the pictures from the Monterey Bay Aquarium website.
