Last week I spent some time in San Francisco, California. Here are my top four favorite attractions:
Alcatraz: A Federal Prison from 1933 to 1963, is rich in history. A short ferry ride to the island provides a great view of the city and bay. The self-guided audio tour of the main cell house gives tourists an overview of prison life and its history. The hour long tour is just the right length. Other points of interest on the island include the lighthouse, morgue, and the Warden’s house.
Golden Gate Bridge: The second longest suspension bridge in the United States is about 1.5 miles long. Rent a bike and cruise along the bridge taking in the sights. After the bridge coast downhill into the town of Sausalito and hop the ferry back to San Francisco.
California Academy of Sciences: Features a planetarium, rainforest environment, natural history, and my favorite an aquarium. The aquarium has over 38,000 animals including coral, camel shrimp, rays, octopi, jellyfish, crabs, eels, and sharks.
Pier 39/Fisherman’s Wharf: Is a great area for tourists to explore, shop, and dine at. Buy some souvenirs, ice cream, and check out the street performances.
