106th Grey Cup

Calgary and Ottawa will meet in the big game this Sunday in Edmonton. This is how the teams stack up in the stats department:

Ottawa was third in passing with 309.9 yards a game. They were last in the league with 94 yards rushing. Calgary averaged 294.7 yards; fourth in the league. The Stampeders were 6th for rushing per game at 99.4 yards. In the turnover ratio Ottawa was +9, good for 3rd, while Calgary held the top position at +13. Ottawa sat eighth in red zone production with 47.3%. Calgary was slightly better at 50.8%; sixth in the CFL. Ottawa running back William Powell rushed for 1,362 yards, averaging 5.4 yards a carry and 85.1 yards a game. His counterpart in Calgary, Don Jackson had a total of 924 yards, 5.8 yards per carry and 71.1 yards a game.

The quarterbacks have similar passer efficiency ratings. Harris is at 99.6 with a completion rate of 70.1%, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Harris amassed 5,116 yards this season and averages 8.3 yards a down. Mitchell’s rating is 99.3 with 60.9% completed passes, 35 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Mitchell ended the season with 5,124 yards and 8.8 yards a down. Mitchell is 1-2 in the Grey Cup. This is Harris’ first Grey Cup start.

On defense, Ottawa held their opponents to 275.2 yards a game; seventh in the league. They were a bit better on rush defense (5th) at 101.9 yards per game. The Redblacks were eighth in sacks allowed with 43 and seventh in sacks made, 33. The Calgary Stampeders’ pass defense was 251.9 yards a game; fourth in the CFL. Against the rush they were first allowing only 86.4 yards each game on average. Ottawa had 144 penalties this year (7th in the league) while Calgary had 109 (2nd in the league).

Redblacks’ kicker, Lewis Ward, missed only one field goal all season giving him a connection rate of 98.1% and a CFL record. He also holds the pro-football record for most consecutive field goals at 48. Stampeders’ kicker, Rene Paredes made 91.1% of his field goal attempts this year.

Calgary won both match ups against Ottawa this year in weeks 3 and 5. Overall, teams from Ottawa are 10-7 in the Grey Cup. The Calgary Stampeders are 7-9 in the big game. This is the fourth time Calgary and an Ottawa-based team will meet in the Grey Cup. Ottawa won in 1968 and 2016, while Calgary took the cup in 1948.
